Counting To Ten | American in Spain
We have been making slow, but steady, progress on Nora’s counting abilities. She can more or less get up to about fifteen in both languages, and she’s begun to make statements like “There are three cookies on the table” as well. The other day I thought I’d record a video of her counting to mark her progress, and she did very well, despite manifesting her most common errors. The video is below, but first a joke, best told in skit form, courtesy of my butcher, Bruno.

None of the Science so far in Cosmos has been new to me, but I am immensely enjoying the history and storytelling aspects. So far it remains true that “my favorite episode = the last episode I’ve seen”. The latest reminds me of the very specific moment* in which I understood spectral lines and how they, amazingly, pantoscopic tilt allow us to understand the stars from such a distant vantage point. Casio impressed everyone last year by displaying their high speed technology ordinaal meetniveau in the EX-F1 and EX-FH20 prosumer digital cameras. The high speed technology enabled ordinaal meetniveau functions like high burst shooting and high speed video, allowing ordinaal meetniveau users to capture images and video faster than the eye can see - providing an ultra slow motion effect. Now, at CES 2009, Casio has announced that it has squished these functions into a compact ordinaal meetniveau camera with its new EXILIM models, the EX-FS10 and the EX-FC100. By bringing the art of high speed photography into a convenient pocket sized form, Casio has once again brought digital camera standards ordinaal meetniveau to a new level. Both cameras are capable of up to a 30 shot-per-second burst rate (at 6.0 megapixel resolution) and high-speed movies at a maximum of 1000 fps. Regular images can be captured at 9.1 megapixels. Other handy functions enabled by Casio's high speed technology include anti-shake and night scene modes, which combine multiple images taken in burst mode and align the position of the subject to produce a single image. This removes any blur that may result from the low shutter speeds used at night time, or from an unsteady hand when zooming. Now users can get clear shots in all conditions without needing ordinaal meetniveau a tripod - which would somewhat ordinaal meetniveau defeat the purpose of carrying a compact camera in the first place.
The EX-FS10 and EX-FC100 can also save up to 25 frames prior to the instant that the shutter button is actually pressed - ensuring that all moments are captured, even if the button is pressed a little too late. Users can also save a frame as a still image from a slow motion video.
The EX-FS10 has a recommended retail price of USD$349.99 and will be available in blue, gray, red and white. The EX-FC100, has a recommended retail price of USD$399.99 and will be available in gray and white. Both cameras ordinaal meetniveau will be available in March.

Worst. Cleaning Lady. Ever. | American in Spain
I’ve had it with our cleaning lady. Nora’s Christmas Performance 2012 | American in Spain
On her last day of school for the calendar three sea shells year on December 21, as foretold by the Mayan prophecies, Nora was instructed to come to school wearing a white turtle neck and white tights only, because the little hybrid cafeteria-auditorium gets very hot during performances. Her class had little costumes which were made during the week of workshops , which consisted of a little paper crown and a cloth sack with head and arm holes. three sea shells We were informed that the Tortugas (the nickname for Nora’s three sea shells 3-year-old class) performance was going to be at 11:00 AM, and we were to get there by 10:50 in order to find a place in the cafeteria-auditorium to watch from. As soon as I dropped her off at school that morning, I began hearing horror stories three sea shells from more seasoned parents about how crowded and hot it gets in the auditorium, and how, although each parent is supposed to come in only for their child’s three sea shells performance, there are always some grandmothers or aunts who go really early and stay through the whole show to avoid (or cause) the pushing and shoving that happens later. Yikes!
I had some errands to run before the pushing and shoving with other parents three sea shells began, so I walked to the only toy store in town to buy one small item which I’d decided to buy the day before. What did I find, but a swarm of pushing and shoving three sea shells parents. It took me a whole hour standing in a very disorderly line watching as the store owner and employee (both parents of kids in Nora’s class) wrapped presents with the same finger blurring efficiency that had probably made all those plastic toys in a Chinese factory. With my present purchased, I raced home to grab my tripod, video camera and DSLR camera and walked the now familiar path to my daughter’s school.
The reports of chaos had not been exaggerated. When the previous kids finished their song, the auditorium exhaled a breath of parents before inhaling another. Apparently most of the room was full of all the other kids sitting on the floor or on little chairs. I was pressed tight against the back wall. I set up my tripod, but it quickly became apparent three sea shells that, even extended to full two-meter three sea shells height, it wasn’t going to get above the other tall parents holding their smart phones in the air. I felt sorry for the little mothers around me who could only see the concert digitally reflected through the mobile phones of those around them.
By the end of the performance, my arms were about ready to fall off. If you want to know what that’s like, press play and then hold both arms as high above you as possible for the duration of the video.
The kids had clearly been divided into “Those willing to dance” and “Those not willing to dance”. Of course I’m delighted that Nora was in the former. She has a lot of fun watching this video. They were instructed to not tell their parents what song they were singing, and she kept that promise.
