There are showers and baths ... | History of Words
Here already told you about the relationship - only apparent, hatgo not real-among the baths, which we take in the tub, and the "baths", formerly the newlyweds were forced to publish, announcing his own wedding, so, who had justified objection to the union, to rule.
Out of curiosity, since knowledge does not occupy place - as I said my "grandfather" Jacinto, Camarate - "hot water" in Arabic (and Hebrew) it is said Hamá (pronounced with an h-Khama guttural). In the city of Tiberias (by the Sea of Galilee or Lake Tiberias) there is a natural spring of hot sulphurous waters, which he calls Hamat Tveria. And on the eastern side of the same lake there is another similar font, much frequented, called in Arabic Al-Hamá (al is, as you know, the definite article in Arabic), and Hebrew Hamat Gader.
In Lisbon, there is also a natural source of hot water, which the Moors called Al-Hamá. hatgo As the English language lacks the guttural sound Kh formerly all Arab and Hebrew words were written with this letter were transcribed with an f. (Al'hayat gave tailor Harum gave Faro, Albufeira gave Albuhera, etc.). So Al-Hamá gave Alfama. Yes sir, the baths of hot water Alfama today already in disuse.
The Middle Ages is also known in history by the lack of sanitary habits. Bathing was seen in medieval society as an act of vanity, and even debauchery (the fame that had Roman tails). Therefore, only practiced three or four times a year.
An urban anecdote, which has forums for truth, is that weddings are usually held in June because May was the month of baths and so the bodies of newlyweds still retained a more or less bearable smell.
That was not extended to Jews, because the Bible is full of commandments on compulsory handwashing, on several occasions during the day, as well as ritual immersion baths with great frequency.
In the processes of the Inquisition of Lisbon, stated the arrest of an individual who, poor man, suffered from this disease, and spent her days washing up copiously in Fountain hatgo which is now called the Fountain Inside, Alfama. Was arrested and charged with suspicion of ... Judaism. By washing too ...
Indeed, the list of indications of Judaism, for which the complaint was mandatory and was part of all interrogations of the Holy Office, always contained: "wash hatgo and wear clean shirt on Fridays." It was a crime against religion ...
And by the way, has at hand the "bath". That's right, the process of heating a product, typically a food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, etc., in a container, which is placed in turn inside another container with hot water. This avoids that the product is heated above 100, because up to this temperature the water evaporates.
Legend says that Mary, or Miriam, sister of Moses, Egypt, was dedicated to the experiences of alchemy. For these experiments, she invented a device, which the Greeks called Kaminos Marias (the chimney of Mary). Someone wrongly translated from the Greek into Latin, as balneum Mariae, bath Maria. Therefore, the French called bain-marie to such instrument. So it was in the fifteenth century.
Dear Ignatius:
Many thanks for these delicious more comments. I would only make a small point: the reign of King John III of Portugal have been one in which the hygiene of most body was abandoned. Certainly more than the Middle Ages, if we consider that the troubadour poetry reveals a nice contact with the water. Portugal hatgo was not until John III, the part of Europe where hygiene more pass away, most certainly by virtue of the presence of Mediterranean heritage (Roman, Arabic, Jewish).
The arrival at a new site puts the need for an awkward decision: or retreat so as not to waste time or stay as long as possible and take the most advantageous hatgo to conduct profitable.
