The American business magazine Forbes elected and finance Monsanto "company of the year 2009". As said the BBC in 31/12 (reflecting the EFE news from New York), hl7 obx the issue of the magazine which will hit newsstands on January 18, contains an article (now available online) that justifies the choice citing the booming company profits and advances in bioengineering who, according to the publication will help feed a growing world population.
The article reports that, even in a year of economic recession, Monsanto earned about $ 2.1 billion and earned $ 11.7 billion, representing an average annual increase of 18% in revenue over the past five year old.
With a value in the $ 44 billion market, the company sold in its last fiscal year, closed on August 31, seed 7.3 billion, compared to 4 billion sold by immediate competitor, Dupont.
Controversies surrounding the company are almost ridiculed the article, which goes on to say that now "even some organic farmers are clamoring for genetically hl7 obx modified seeds." The text repeats all the myths surrounding biotechnology hl7 obx (saying that the modified seeds are more productive, require less pesticides and benefit the environment) and quips to say that although farmers complain of seed prices continue hl7 obx to buy them.
Incidentally, on this particular, the article suggests that current criticisms of transgenic seeds are due to the fact that they are "too good", which would have given the company a position close to the monopoly in some seed markets.
Remember that Monsanto is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice and at least two state attorneys general, who are evaluating whether the company's practices violate the antitrust laws of the country. These practices, which include licensing agreements and private contracts, are also at the heart of civil antitrust cases against Monsanto presented by its competitors, including a 2004 case filed by Syngenta AG that was settled by means of an agreement, and a dispute still ongoing with DuPont (to know more, read the Associated Press story translated by Humanitas Institute Unisinos).
Actually, the prize that really should have been featured in the press that was announced at the World Climate Conference in Copenhagen on 15/12/2009: the "Angry Mermaid Trophy" (in Brazil, only reported by Isto É - Money of 23/12).
The award was conceived by a group of six NGOs, including Friends of the Earth International, to denounce the worst corporate climate lobbyist in Copenhagen. The trophy, which alludes to a major tourist symbols of Copenhagen (the statue of "Little Mermaid" located in stone seafront), was created to denounce the perverse role of corporate lobbyists and highlight the business groups and companies that have made the greatest effort to sabotage the discussions and measures on climate, while promoted false - but profitable - solutions.
Monsanto was elected with 37% of the vote by an audience of 10,000 people who voted between 16/11 and 13/12/2009. Shell took second place with 18% of the vote, and the American Petroleum Institute in third with 14%. The complete list included eight companies.
Monsanto has chosen to promote its GM crops as a solution to climate change and push them for use in biofuels. Furthermore, the expansion of GM soy in Latin America is contributing to deforestation and significant emissions hl7 obx of greenhouse gases.
The group also reports that the Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS, its acronym in English), of which Monsanto is a part, is helping to promote the company by allowing GM soy to be labeled as "responsible". Monsanto also wants GM soy to be funded by the Clean Development Mechanism, which would allow polluting industries in the developed world outweighed their emissions by buying carbon credits from projects with transgenic soy (a false solution to climate change and that does not lead to reduction emissions in rich countries).
