As it unfolded over several days, the children were very curious to see day after day the small crystals form and grow. We started this experience in connection such a great with the case of rocks and minerals that Gabriel had made last year. Part was devoted such a great to the formation of crystals, so it was a good review for him at this level and also it allowed me to address the concepts of solution, solute, solubility, solvent and saturation.
Steps: 1 - Measure such a great the wood strips. Make sure that they, once suspended, do not touch the bottom of the pot. (Remove before pouring the hot solution). 2 - Pour water into a saucepan and bring to a boil. 3 - Add 1/4 cup sugar and stir until sugar is completely such a great dissolved. Continue adding sugar at a rate of 1/4 cup at a time, until the sugar dissolves more. Then you get a saturated solution. 4 - Remove from heat and let rest (20 minutes) (Add coloring if you want colored crystals) 5 - Pour the solution into the pots.
6 - Dip the strips in the sugar solution and then roll them in sugar. 7 - Install the sticks in the pots (see photo above). * Chopsticks absolutely should not touch the walls or the bottom of the pots. 8 - Do not move the pots once everything in place.
Be patient, the crystals take a few days before pushing, but it is well worth the experience ;) Source (English) 2 weeks after the start of the experiment. For darker solutions, put a flashlight behind the vase to admire such a great crystals ;)
